How many of us have pondered the thought of “just where did half of my socks go?” I read a funny quote that said lost socks come back as Tupperware lids! May 9th has been designated as “National Lost Sock Memorial Day.” It is quite a unique “holiday” and one that you can easily make into a fun day of learning in your classroom.

Ask the children to draw a picture showing where they think the lost socks go. Work together to add print.
How many words can you come up with that rhyme with “sock?”
Mathematics:
Bring in some socks from home (encourage the children to do this as well). Try to have some matching and some mismatched socks. Some activities you can do would be matching (one to one correspondence), sorting by color or size, comparing quantities, addition and subtraction, and counting.
Art:
Children can create sock puppets using the collage materials from the art center. Socks also make great erasers for dry erase boards! Do you have older children and are feeling adventurous? Tie dye socks! Click here for instructions.
