  • 4 oranges
  • Lemon juice
  • 2 Tablespoons of sugar

Step 1: Peel the skin off the oranges

Step 2: Cut each orange into 8 round slices (teacher step)

Step 3: Place the oranges in a bowl and squirt lemon juice over them

Step 4: Sprinkle sugar over the rounds and refrigerate for 5 minutes


I like making this recipe with preschool children because it incorporates so many learning concepts. It is a simple recipe and most steps can be completed by the children. A few of the learning concepts that I have used with this recipe are:

  • As you peel the skin, you can talk about the color and texture of the orange along with the science of what skin does for our bodies.
  • When you slice the orange, talk to the children about the shape and how you could make different shapes if you cut it in a different way.
  • I like that it shows children some new things about a healthy fruit… even if we add a little sugar for sweetness!
