Living a healthy life isn’t just about what you eat. Of course, eating healthy foods are important and exercise builds endurance and eliminates excess weight. As educators we tend to be nurturing and want to resolve world issues. We are less likely to put ourselves first. But in the long run, if you don’t fill up your own cup, you won’t be able to pour from it anymore.

If you tend to put yourself at the very end of the priority list, especially when the list gets longer and longer you are not only neglecting yourself, but you’re also neglecting everyone who relies on you. Think about the instructions during an airplane emergency, you must put on your own mask before assisting others.

As parents we’ll do absolutely anything for our kids. But are you taking care of yourself? Yes. Taking care of ourselves is just as important as making sure our kids have food on the table or ensuring that they don’t play with fire. Our well-being is equally important.

So, with that said I’d like to offer my own personal tips and tricks for sustaining and maintaining a healthy social/emotional lifestyle. These are some of the ways I self-care and you can too!

  1. Take a walk in the park.
  2. Order dinner.
  3. Watch a funny movie.
  4. Take a bubble bath.
  5. Buy myself flowers (just because).
  6. Read an inspirational book.
  7. Stargaze
  8. Take a drive
  9. Watch the waves at the beach.
  10. Buy and wear a new outfit (even if I have nowhere to go and for no reason,) I am the reason!
  11. Watch the sunrise or set.
  12. Meditate
  13. Pray
  14. Declutter
  15. Get a massage
  16. Do my hair in a different style, for no other reason than it makes me feel better.
  17. Bake your favorite dessert and then indulge (you don’t have to eat the entire pie).
  18. Spend time with your loved ones.
  19. Write a list of things you’re grateful for.
  20. Take a trip.

Now that you’ve read my tips and tricks for a healthier me, consider what you can do to become a healthier you. Now go and write your own list. Feel free to use some ideas of mine but remember my list isn’t one size fits all. So, add what you like and above all enjoy!!
