Chalk is an open-ended art material that can be used for so much more than just art. Chalk gives children the opportunity to learn so many different skills such as eye hand coordination, problem solving, and taking turns.

Chalk can be used in art in a variety of ways. Chalk comes in different sizes and shapes to be age appropriate for children who are using it. Children can use chalk on paper, cement, macadam, and blackboards. Drawing and sketching is the easiest way to use chalk. Adding water to chalk can add a new element to the art.

Dramatic play comes to mind as children draw roadways for their cars to use outside. Children can add buildings, trees, and people to their drawings.

Board games are another way to use chalk. Some centers may have pre-painted hopscotch boards or four-square marks. With chalk you can add other games such as chutes and ladders by creating a simple board on the playground with a few ‘chutes’ and ‘ladders.’ Depending on the age of the children, the board can be made bigger or smaller.

Children can create their own version of Twister using different colors of chalk to draw circles.

Chalk mazes can be fun. Create squiggly lines and curves and then have the children move through them.

Chalk bullseye is another game that can be drawn on the ground for children to practice large motor skills and taking turns. Draw a few concentric circles and see where the children can aim and throw bean bags.

Science can be added to the use of chalk by tracing shadows on the playground and then observing how they change throughout the day.

Chalk has many uses beyond art and can offer children a variety of skills to practice.
